- Measure the width and length of your wall
- Multiply the width by .57 and .75
- Multiply the length by .57 and .75
The width and length of your framed art should fall within the range of the above calculation.
BEFORE PURCHASING ARTWORK
Before purchasing your art, I recommend you outline the dimensions of the piece on your wall. In the past, I've taped printer paper to my wall, outlined the dimensions with painter's tape, and even placed sticky notes where the corners of my artwork will go if I'm in a rush. You may want to step back and take a photo with your phone. Then, readjust as needed and compare different sizes.
ART OVER A SOFA OR CREDENZA
Your art should be 2/3 to 3/4 the width of your sofa. Your artwork should never be wider than the sofa or couch. If you opt for 2-3 smaller pieces rather than one large piece, consider leaving ~4-7" between each piece. It should be hung 6” - 12” above the top of your couch.
The width of your art shouldn't be smaller than the fireplace’s opening or wider than the mantle. Artwork should hang 3" - 6" above the mantle.
57” above the floor is the general rule...but rules are made to be broken! The larger the artwork, the lower it can be hung.
